Vehicle detection loops, called inductive-loop traffic detectors, can detect vehicles passing or arriving at a certain point, for instance when approaching an automatic gate. A loop of wire installed into the pavement detects the presence of a vehicle, sending a signal to a road loop controller – which in turn activates a relay that can be used to open an automatic gate or door. Road Loop Vehicle Detection systems have been in use for many years and are a very reliable way of automatically opening a gate or door.
